Comentarios: MaxQDA is robustly designed and can handle very large projects that involve text, video and audio. I am planning to use it for several large and complex projects.

Puntos a favor: MaxQDA runs on Windows, Mac, and has a portable version as well for use when travelling.
Users define codes and then tag documents with the codes. Each code can have a set of custom properties that include instance-specific values. Codes can be either flat, or hierarchically arranged, each of which has certain advantages. Flat coding prevents imposing a structure on data while hierarchical coding can help researchers find patterns in the document, assists with analysis and building models. Coding can include colour codes which makes it easier for the user to identify themes in the data.
Many tutorials can be found online and via the MaxqDA website. The user discussion forum is also a useful place for learning how to use the program and to apply the software to specific research needs. Because good tutorials can be found easily, users will have less trouble learning how to use this powerful program.

Puntos en contra: MaxQDA is outstanding- its designed in Germany so that is to be expected :). Prices for educational and NGOs are reasonable. Students especially should note the company's policy regarding student licenses - the license will expire after 2 years. If you are a grad student who expends hundreds of hours on coding and analyzing your data with MaxQDA, you'll find that you are unable to continue to work on your project after graduation unless you buy a full-price commercial license. The expenses will add up rapidly. Student licenses should not expire and prevent users from continuing to work with their data using their purchased version of the software.

Ease of coding, but a bit confusing

Comentarios: I was able to analyze qualitative data from interviews in one spot. It allowed me to visualize my codes which helped me with writing up my studies.

Puntos a favor: Once you have created a qualitative code, the software makes it really easy to assign codes to transcripts. It has a lot of online tutorials, and there are a lot of different tools to use to analyze your data once it is coded.

Puntos en contra: I found it a bit confusing to use the software to organize the data once all of the data is coded. There are supposedly a ton of functions that allow you to organize the data, yet, even with doing the online, it still felt difficult to me. The functionality is great, but the usability still needs to improve.
